95 - Sharif Hamza: Horse Play

Sharif Hamza: Horse Play

A cinematic look at equestrian vaulting.

The balletic grace of half a dozen gymnasts on horseback is captured in Sharif Hamza’s elegant film We Vault. Written by Laura Albert, aka the writer behind the infamous JT LeRoy pseudonym, Hamza’s sun-dappled short pays homage to the refined skill of equestrian vaulting. Having documented daredevil motocross riders and a professional rowing team, today’s film again showcases the director’s ability to capture the transcendent beauty and elegance of any sport. In true Hamza style, a strong fashion narrative is present, with custom body suits featuring alongside pieces by Thomas Tait and Anthony Vaccarello.

Limber Up: Shake It Off

High-fashion endurance from America’s Olympic gymnast hopefuls
A trio of teenage gymnasts trade the gym for Los Angeles’ Angels Gate Park Center in Lift Up, which follows their bid to be part of the USA’s 2016 Olympics team. “I've always been a big fan of rhythmic gymnastics and I used to practice the sport as a kid,” says Buenos Aires-born, New York-based director Agostina Gálvez, who wanted to bring out the hypnotizing element of Nastasya Generalova, Aliya Protto and Gabrielle Lowenstein’s routines. “The geometry of the location plays well with the gymnasts’ bodies, and also with the apparatus they use when they perform.”

88 - Delvaux Miniatures Have Belgitude

Director Jaco Van Dormael takes us on a surreal journey for the oldest fine leather goods house in the world.

Celebrating nearly 200 years of au courant design, Belgian house of Delvaux takes us on a dreamlike trip with the release of Les Miniatures Belgitude—a series of miniature versions of its iconic Brilliant bag, first designed in 1958 on the occasion of Belgium hosting the post-war World’s Fair. “Belgitude is everything that makes this small country so special—a combination of Belgium and Attitude,” says Christina Zeller, the brand’s artistic director.

In a new film featuring a set made of an array of foodstuffs—from fries to waffles—Belgian director Jaco Van Dormael, known for his award-winning films Mr Nobody and Toto le Héro, conjures the surreal spirit of artist René Magritte to imagine a mind-boggling world that plays with perspective and scale.

“Belgitude is everything that makes this small country so special—a combination of Belgium and Attitude”

Dedicated to seven cultural centers across the Belgium, each Belgitude bag takes on a signature style from the surrealist master—from a simple handwritten word to a dreamlike sky filled with clouds. “It’s a way to express ourselves in a very personal manner,” says Zeller. “A way of living with a particular sense of humour, lightness and the ability not to take yourself too seriously.”

87 - Torgny – Into The Night

The Norwegian artist’s lyrics take over a concrete-filled Oslo in a display of light and text
The latest release from electro-pop producer Torgny, a collaboration with computational design studio Void and photographer Pernille Sandberg, sees the Nordic act’s lyrics projected on the building façades of Oslo at night. Here, he talks about the thought process behind the project:
“What started out as an aesthetic exploration of the lyric video through simple projection techniques, gradually grew into a series of guerrilla light installations as the team hauled a video projector to some of the city’s most iconic buildings and places—some well known, some half-forgotten.

“To us, the lyrics came to represent one level of communication layered on top of another—the language of concrete structures and the human body.

“The team hauled a video projector to some of the city’s most iconic buildings”

“By juxtaposing images of the urban landscape with up-close footage of the artist’s uncovered body, we explored the dissonance as well as the similarities between humans and manmade artefacts.”
